Shockwave Therapy Nutley

Shockwave Therapy: Who Is It Suitable For?

Shockwave therapy really is for anyone who’s experiencing musculoskeletal issues. From young athletes to geriatric patients. We use shockwave to decrease pain and increase function. John recently had an 89-year-old patient who had osteoarthritis of the hip. As a result of her age, her surgeon did not want her to undergo surgery but she wasn’t getting much benefit from traditional therapy. After coming to Core Physical Therapy, we immediately began treatment and after 12 sessions she came back to report being able to sleep through the night, with improved mobility and an easier time walking.

Another patient came in with Achilles tendonitis. He wanted to lose weight so he started a workout program in the gym but this resulted in him tearing his Achilles.

Understandably, he wanted to return to the gym as soon as possible and was looking for a quick recovery – something that we could provide through shockwave treatment. After six sessions of treatment, we had him not only back in the gym but also running and skipping rope as well – another great success story.

Overall, shockwave therapy is used to help treat a diverse range of conditions including:

  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfers elbow
  • Runner’s knee
  • Shin splints
  • Bony heel spurs

What you may have been told that is simply Not true!

One of the myths and misconceptions about shockwave therapy is that it’s only suitable for young athletes. While the technology is popular amongst this demographic, it’s benefits extend far beyond this group.  This misconception likely arises from the high visibility of athletes using the treatment to recover from sports injuries and maintain peak physical condition. However, shockwave therapy is a versatile treatment that has been proven to treat people who lead sedentary lifestyles. At Core Physical Therapy, we use shockwave technology to treat a diverse range of people suffering from plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, chronic pelvic syndrome, and so many more conditions.

Another myth that John and the team at Core hear quite often is that shockwave therapy is painful. While it’s true that shockwave therapy can cause some discomfort, especially during initial sessions, it’s usually well-tolerated and the level of pain experienced is often less than anticipated. Any discomfort experienced during the session is usually brief. Each session lasts between 10 to 20 minutes and the pain typically subsides after the treatment is completed, usually within 24 hours. Many patients we have helped at Core Physical Therapy report that the discomfort experienced during shockwave therapy is manageable and worth the relief they experience post-treatment. The brief period of discomfort is often outweighed by the long-term benefits.
